I've also enclosed the text of my introduction to Bay Area Sports Stars, which explains the Bay Area situation in a bit more detail. Anyway, here are the starting dates for the sections of the CIF, which was formed in March, Football was governed in by the Amateur Academic Athletic Association.
Other games and meets were arranged in a haphazard manner untilwhen competition around the bay was provided by the Academic Athletic League. The AAL provided structured competition for boys in football, baseball, swimming, tennis and track and field. Basketball was added early in the 20th Century.
A few schools offered less formal interscholastic competition for girls in baseball, basketball, swimming, tennis and volleyball. Teams represented schools, but were not under the direct control of principals, superintendents or elected school officials.
There were frequent disagreements over eligibility, rules and finances. InJames E.
After a series of meetings, the California Interscholastic Federation was formed in March, Its main purpose was to put the direction of high school athletics in the hands of educators. The NCS was established in September, Of 70 high schools invited to join, only 15 responded initially. Some needed more time to meet and discuss the new organization. Scores of other schools became members within the next few years. Although several Oakland high schools were CIF members in the first few years after the organization formed, they dropped out in when the Oakland Athletic League was created.
Four years later, the Sacramento-San Joaquin Section was organized. Eventually, it took in Solano County schools. Schools in all five sections belong to leagues which sponsor competition in up to 16 sports for boys and girls -- who became full fledged partners in the prep sports world when federal Title IX legislation was passed in the early s. Many athletes compete for post season section championships.
In addition, statewide titles are awarded by the CIF in track and field starting in for boys and for girlsboys wrestlinggirls volleyballbasketballcross countrygirls golf and boys golf Still, like the girls, the boys scored close to points and had many contributors. Jon DeLeon chipped in courageously, running themile and two mile for the Panthers. Mike Blanco, whose improvement in the hurdles is becoming more and more noticeable, won the meters race in a PR Sophomore, first-year runner Diego Jara ran a huge race in the mile, running 4: I like to see the kind of complete, team effort we had today.
The other kids were ready to step in and showcase their talents and show off what their hard-work has gotten them. Good luck to all the athletes competing this weekend! Arcadia, however, is a much bigger stage and by far the biggest test for this group thus far.
2013 Results - California CIF Outdoor State Championships
Considering the stage they were on, I am extremely proud of this group. Carly was especially big on her leg. That time is also the 2nd best in school history and the winning race keeps the girls undefeated in head-to-head competition this season.
She struggled all day but continued to battle. Today was a good day for her. Congratulations to all who competed. Come out and support the Panthers! Inspired by the nifty Nike backpacks being awarded to the winners, the girls improved their seasonal best by almost 3 seconds. Anchorperson Chloe Jenkins, whose Earlier in the day, that same quartet also broke a 5 year old school record in the 4 x meter relay, running 9: Carly Schulz also hurdled to a PR of her own, running Congratulations to all the Panthers who competed this weekend.
Held at Arcadia High School near Pasadena, CAArcadia is widely regarded as the most competitive, talent-laden high school meet in the country… and a certainly a precursor to the California State Meet. Good luck to the Panthers this weekend! Who leads the team in each event? Are there any surprises?

Has anyone cracked the top ten all-time list? For the boys, seniors Caleb Coleman and Austin Collier, along with junior Liam Godfrey provided a lot of the Panthers upfront firepower. Coleman, running in the shadows of the CAL campus he will call home over the next four years, won both the and meter dashes… the former in a hand-timed best of Collier, having been hampered by a nagging hip injury over the past several weeks, returned to his competition in fine form… scoring a pair of personal bests in his specialties the long and high jumps.
While Caleb and Austin were sprinting and jumping their way to top podium finishes, junior Liam Godfrey joined the act with a pair of decisive wins in the hurdle races. After winning the meter race, Liam later stormed to a 2 second victory in his specialty, the meter race.
Other notable performances were turned in by Patrick Mariolle 4: After leading the 4 x team to victory, she then cruised to victory in the hurdles, meter dash, and her specialty, the hurdles.
Some bystanders later claim to have heard her pleading with the starter to slow the pace of the meet in order to grab a few more minutes of oxygen.
